Equine Assisted CBT Counselling: Supporting Young Minds Through Horses

Equine Assisted CBT Counselling combines the structured, evidence-based approach of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with the unique therapeutic benefits of working alongside horses. At Pony Pals Wrekin, this approach helps young people explore thoughts, emotions and behaviours in a calm, supportive and sensory-aware environment.

For many children and young people, particularly those who are neurodiverse or who experience anxiety, traditional talking therapies can feel overwhelming or difficult to engage with. Working with horses often makes the process feel more natural and less pressured. The horse becomes a quiet partner in the therapeutic space, helping young people feel safe enough to explore their thoughts and emotions.

Understanding Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviours

CBT focuses on helping individuals understand how their thoughts, feelings and behaviours are connected. Equine Assisted CBT brings these ideas to life through practical experiences with horses.

For example, a young person may learn how their body language, confidence or anxiety affects how the horse responds. These real-time interactions create powerful opportunities to reflect on emotions and behaviour patterns in a way that feels tangible and easy to understand.

Rather than simply talking about feelings, young people can see and experience the effects of emotional regulation, confidence and communication through their interactions with the horse.

A Safe and Supportive Environment

The equine environment naturally encourages calm and focus. Horses respond best to clear communication and regulated behaviour, which helps young people practise slowing down, managing emotions and developing awareness of their own responses.

Sessions are always paced carefully and adapted to the individual. For young people who experience anxiety, sensory sensitivities or difficulties with social communication, the presence of the horse can create a sense of connection that helps reduce pressure and build trust.

Learning Through Experience

Equine Assisted CBT is highly experiential. Activities may include groundwork with the horse, leading exercises, obstacle tasks or gentle riding depending on the needs and comfort of the young person.

These activities create opportunities to explore themes such as:

  • confidence and self-belief

  • managing anxious thoughts

  • emotional regulation

  • problem solving

  • resilience when things feel difficult

The horse’s honest and immediate responses provide valuable feedback that helps young people recognise their own strengths and develop new strategies for managing challenges.

Building Confidence and Emotional Skills

As young people begin to understand how their thoughts and emotions influence their behaviour, they can start to develop practical strategies for managing difficult situations. The supportive presence of the horse often helps them practise these skills in a way that feels safe and achievable.

Over time, these experiences can strengthen confidence, improve emotional regulation and help young people feel more capable of navigating everyday challenges.

A Gentle, Individual Approach

At Pony Pals Wrekin, Equine Assisted CBT Counselling is always tailored to the individual young person. Sessions are child-led and designed to meet each young person where they are, focusing on strengths and building confidence gradually.

The partnership between horse, practitioner and young person creates a unique therapeutic environment where learning, reflection and personal growth can happen naturally.

Through this approach, horses become more than companions — they become powerful partners in helping young people understand themselves, develop resilience and build skills that support their wellbeing both now and in the future.
